Life-changing: Knox Leisureworks Supports Heart Health of Veterans, Wins Award

An inspiring initiative at Knox Leisureworks in Victoria has won the Community Program Award at the 2025 Belgravia Leisure Awards! Following a successful 12-month Heart Health exercise program, veterans were left without a supportive group setting to continue their progress. A pressing need was identified and answered by the Vietnam Veterans Association Australia (VVAA), together with the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA), who co-designed a new exercise program.

This initiative ensures continuity of care and empowers veterans to remain active, supported and socially engaged within their community. Many benefits have come out of the program such as injury management, treatment of chronic conditions, improved mental wellbeing and boosted social connection through community engagement. It’s a testament to what happens when thoughtful programming meets heartfelt purpose.

Darren Allen, Area Manager at Belgravia Leisure, shared:

“Winning the award was a moment to celebrate a simple but incredibly powerful program that has genuinely changed the outlook and lives of all the participants. The combination of the program’s leader, Sophie Caldwell and the veterans participating has established a strong bond of trust, grit and mateship. We’ve seen sustained positive behaviour change resulting in better overall health, connection and commitment to the program.”

Delivered at Knox, the twice-weekly sessions are tailored to veterans’ unique needs. One class focuses on individual goals, while the second brings participants together through group challenges that foster camaraderie, teamwork and a shared sense of achievement.

However, the magic doesn’t stop when the workout ends. The post-session social hour in the on-site café has become a cherished ritual, strengthening bonds and building motivation. It’s a space where stories are shared, laughter is common and friendships flourish.

Recognising the broader needs of the community, a weekly class was also introduced for veterans’ partners and widows, offering a vital outlet for social and physical wellbeing. These sessions have enriched community cohesion and created inclusive, ongoing opportunities for leisure and connection.

When it comes to making a lasting impact, community programs are a powerful way to shape the well-being and health outcomes of those we care about. That’s exactly what the DVA Heart Health exercise program at Knox Leisureworks in Victoria has achieved: creating a space where physical wellbeing, mental health and genuine connection come together.
